A zero-click search is answered before anyone has to visit

A zero-click search is a query where the person gets their answer directly on the search results page, through a featured snippet, a knowledge panel, an AI Overview, or a direct answer box, and never clicks through to any website. The search still happened and the question still got answered; the visit just never occurred.

Definition

A zero-click search is a search engine query that ends without the user clicking any organic result, because the answer appeared directly on the results page itself. It is measured as a share of total searches, and it has been rising for a decade as search engines answer more queries in place rather than only linking out to them.

What actually produces a zero-click result

Several distinct features on a results page can end a search without a click: a featured snippet pulling one passage from a page, a knowledge panel assembling facts about an entity, a People Also Ask box, a direct answer for a factual query, or, increasingly, an AI Overview that synthesises an answer from several sources at once.

These are not new inventions. Featured snippets and knowledge panels have shaped zero-click behaviour for close to a decade. What has changed is the pace: AI Overviews answer a wider range of queries in more depth than a snippet ever did, and they are now the fastest-growing reason a search ends without a visit.

68%

of Google searches in the US ended without a click to any website in the first four months of 2026, up from about 60% in 2024, based on Similarweb clickstream data.

37.9%

of AI Overview citations come from a page already ranking in the top 10 organic results, while 31% come from beyond position 100, measured across 863,000 SERPs and 4 million cited URLs.

The question still gets answered. The only thing that changed is whether a business gets credited for it.

Why the rate is not the same for every query

A simple factual question, a definition, a conversion, a quick how-to, is the easiest thing for a search engine to answer directly, so informational and local queries end in a zero-click result more often than most other kinds.

Queries closer to an actual purchase decision behave differently. Someone comparing products or ready to buy usually still needs to reach an actual page to act, so commercial and transactional queries send a click through far more often than a simple factual one does.

What it means for a business, beyond the traffic number

A rising zero-click rate is not automatically a loss. Ranking well enough to be the source behind a snippet or an AI Overview is a form of visibility even without a click, and for a brand question, being named accurately in that answer can matter more than one more visit would have.

The risk is being left out of the answer entirely, or being represented inaccurately in one a business never sees. That depends on the same groundwork as any other AI visibility work: content structured clearly enough for a system to lift with confidence, and claims specific enough to be worth citing by name.

Common questions

Is a zero-click search bad for a business?

It depends what it replaces. If a search that used to bring a click now answers the question directly and correctly, the business may lose the visit but still shape the answer. It is only a clear loss when the search engine gets the answer wrong, or credits a competitor instead.

Do all search types end in zero clicks at the same rate?

No. Informational and local queries, the ones easiest to answer directly on the results page, end without a click far more often than commercial or transactional queries, where someone is closer to actually buying and more likely to click through.

Is a zero-click search the same as an AI Overview?

No, AI Overviews are one cause of zero-click searches, not the whole category. Featured snippets, knowledge panels, and direct answer boxes have produced zero-click results for years; AI Overviews are simply the newest and fastest-growing source of them.

How does a business get credited for a zero-click answer?

By being the source the search engine or AI system cites or names when it answers, even though no click happened. That depends on the same fundamentals as any other AI visibility: clear structure, accurate claims, and content a system can lift and attribute confidently.

Can a business measure how many zero-click impressions it is getting?

Not precisely from Google Search Console alone, which shows impressions and clicks but does not separately break out which impressions ended without a click. The gap between total impressions and total clicks for a query is the closest proxy available today.
