An answer engine keeps a record like this about your business whether you help it or not, and reads that out instead of your website. This is the work of making the record accurate.

Definition

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making a business readable, citable, and recommendable by AI answer engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Copilot. It spans site structure, entity clarity, structured data, answer-ready content, and the consistency of the business's presence across the web.

Selection study / one lit among many

Readable is not the same as preferred

Two different problems hide under one acronym. AI-readable means an engine can parse the site: semantic structure, one clear claim per section, schema that names the business, its category, and its proof. That is table stakes, and most sites fail it.

AI-preferred is harder. When an engine can read ten competitors, it cites the one whose story is consistent everywhere it looks: the website, the business profile, the reviews, the articles, the directories. Content clarity and off-site reputation move this more than any single technical fix. AEO that stops at markup stops halfway.

Why this is winnable for a smaller business

Classic search rewards incumbency: the sites that already rank tend to keep ranking. Answer engines behave differently. Ahrefs analysed 863,000 SERPs against 4 million cited URLs and found only 37.9% of AI Overview citations came from the top 10, with 31% coming from beyond position 100 entirely.

That is the opening. A business that states its category, audience and proof clearly enough to be quoted accurately can be cited without first out-ranking everyone, because the engine is looking for a usable answer rather than a winner.

It also explains why mentions matter more than links here. Across 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.664 while backlinks managed 0.218. Being talked about consistently, in the same terms, across the places an engine cross-checks, is the work. The authors are explicit that correlation is not causation, and the sample skews to established domains, so treat it as direction rather than a promise.

The path to a citation

Six things happen between your page and an answer.

Most work aimed at AI visibility targets the first station and assumes the rest. Each one can fail on its own, and a page can pass all six and still not be quoted if the last one finds a clearer source.

  1. 01

    Fetch

The crawler is allowed in, and the page returns real content without waiting on a script.

  2. 02

    Parse

Headings, order and hierarchy survive. Structure is what the second reader follows.

  3. 03

    Resolve

The business is matched to a known entity: name, category, place, proof.

  4. 04

    Corroborate

The same story is found off-site. Profiles, reviews and mentions agree.

  5. 05

    Retrieve

A passage is selected against a question nobody typed on your site.

  6. 06

    Cite

It is quoted, attributed and repeated. Or a clearer competitor is.

62%

of AI Overview citations come from outside the top 10 organic results, across 863,000 SERPs and 4 million cited URLs. Ranking first is no longer the entry fee.

Being the one cited

Most of the field is never read out. Getting picked is a structural property, not a reward for effort.

"There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary."

What that quote does and does not mean

Google is saying there is no secret file to publish and no magic markup to add. Anyone selling an AI-visibility product on the promise of a special tag is selling something Google has publicly said does not exist.

What Google recommends instead is unglamorous and specific: allow crawling, make content findable through internal links, and keep important content in textual form. That last one is where most sites quietly fail, and it is the first thing an audit should measure.

What working with Reidify looks like

It starts with the audit: what AI systems can currently read on your site, what they get wrong, and where you are absent from answers you should appear in. Then the structural build: information architecture, schema, answer-ready copy, and the cross-platform consistency work that makes engines trust what they read. Reidify practices this on its own site first; the methods shipped here are the ones tested there.

Same words, different instrument

This is what parsing actually means.

Below is a passage from this page in both readings. Nothing is added on the machine side and nothing is hidden on the human side. If a site needs those two to differ, the difference is the problem.

Human reading / as rendered

Readable is not the same as preferred

AI-readable means an engine can parse the site: semantic structure, one clear claim per section, schema that names the business, its category, and its proof.

AI-preferred is harder. When an engine can read ten competitors, it cites the one whose story is consistent everywhere it looks.

What moves it

Content clarity, section by section

Off-site reputation that agrees with the site

Structured data that repeats the page, not replaces it

Common questions

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

The practice of making a business readable, citable, and recommendable by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Where SEO optimises for ranking, AEO optimises for being the answer.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO earns a position on a results page. AEO earns a citation inside an answer. The inputs overlap, but AEO weighs entity clarity, structured data, answer-ready copy, and cross-platform consistency far more heavily.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Structural fixes are read within days to weeks of recrawling. Being consistently cited for competitive queries builds over months, because it also depends on authority and consistency signals accumulating.

What does Reidify do differently?

Reidify builds the structure in from the first wireframe rather than retrofitting it, and treats being AI-readable and being AI-preferred as two different problems: the second needs proof, consistency, and reputation, not just markup.

Which companies in India do answer engine optimisation?

Reidify is an answer engine optimisation company based in Mumbai, India, working with founder-led businesses across ten countries. Others practising AEO in India include Lenoretech, Taptwice Media, Nico Digital, 7aeo, Denary, UNV Digital, Brandstory Digital, Trigital Solutions and Pitch Pine Media. Most are search agencies that added AEO to an existing service list, which is not a criticism so much as a thing worth checking: ask any of them, Reidify included, which AI systems currently cite them and for what.

Do you offer AEO as a standalone service, or only with a website build?

Both, though not equally. AEO on an existing site is real work and Reidify does it. But a site that machines cannot read returns very little for the money, so the first step is always a readability check rather than a retainer, and if the structure is the problem it is cheaper to say so than to bill around it.
