AEO is the SEO you have not done yet
Search engine optimisation earned you a ranking. Answer engine optimisation decides whether an AI assistant mentions you at all. Most sites have done the first and skipped the second.
- SEO earns a ranking in a list of links. AEO earns a mention inside an answer, with no list and no click required.
- The two disciplines overlap more than they compete, since both reward clear structure and plain, specific language.
- The sites already structured for people and crawlers are closest to ready; the gap is usually structured data and directly answerable phrasing.
Not a replacement, an extension
Answer engine optimisation is not a new discipline that replaces search work. It is most of the search work you already know, applied to a reader that summarises instead of ranking.
The fundamentals carry over unchanged: clear structure, honest titles, fast pages, sane internal links, and content that actually answers something. What changes is the output. Instead of a position in a list, you get quoted, paraphrased, or ignored.
Anyone selling AEO as an unrelated new service is selling you the same checklist with a different label.
What genuinely differs
A ranking rewards the best page. A summary rewards the clearest explanation. Those are not the same target, and the second one punishes hedging much harder.
Summarisers also read across your whole site at once rather than page by page. Contradictions that never mattered when each page was judged alone become the thing that decides how you get described.
And there is no position to check. You either appear in the answer or you do not, which makes the work feel less measurable and more like ordinary editorial discipline. It is.
The unglamorous list
One canonical statement of what the business does, in plain words, on a page that is easy to find. Structured data that agrees with that statement. Contact and location details that are identical everywhere they appear.
A heading tree per page that could stand in for an outline. Content that answers real questions rather than performing expertise. Links that describe their destination.
None of it is clever. All of it compounds.
Where the leverage actually is
Most sites do not lose here on technique. They lose because nobody has decided, in one sentence, what the business is and who it is for.
Until that sentence exists, every downstream system is guessing, and every guess is slightly different. Once it exists, the technical work is mostly a matter of stating it consistently.
Start with the sentence. The markup is the easy half.
