What answer engines actually read

When an AI answer engine reads your site, it does not see your design. It reads structure, headings, and the plain meaning of your words.

In brief
  • An answer engine reads the document underneath: the heading order, the labels, the links, and the plain sentences that describe what you do.
  • If that underlying structure is clear, the engine can summarise your business accurately.
  • The sites that machines can read become the sites that get recommended.
01

They read the document, not the design

When an answer engine reads your site, it does not see your design. It reads structure, headings, and the plain meaning of your words.

Everything you spent the most time on, the motion, the spacing, the photography, is invisible at this layer. What survives is the underlying document: what the page is called, how it is organised, what it claims, and what it links to.

That is not an argument against design. It is an argument for making sure the design sits on top of a document that says the right thing.

02

Hierarchy is the argument

The heading order is the closest thing a page has to an outline. An engine uses it to work out which ideas are primary, which are supporting, and how the parts relate.

If the heading tree reads like a table of contents for your business, the engine can summarise you. If it reads like a mood board, it cannot.

If the heading tree reads like a table of contents for your business, the engine can summarise you. If it reads like a mood board, it cannot, and it will fall back to whatever text it can find, which is often your footer.

03

Ambiguity gets resolved without you

Every site contains claims that are slightly unclear. What exactly do you sell. Who exactly is it for. Where are you actually based. A human visitor resolves that ambiguity by asking, or by giving up.

A machine resolves it by guessing, and it does not tell you what it guessed. The guess then travels: into summaries, into recommendations, into the answer someone reads instead of visiting your site.

The fix is not more copy. It is deciding the answer once and stating it in one place, plainly.

04

What this changes about writing

Write the plain sentence first. If a section cannot survive being reduced to one clear line, the section is decoration rather than content.

Prefer specific nouns to abstract ones. Name the service, the place, the audience. Clever phrasing that requires context to decode is exactly the material that gets dropped or misread.

The test is simple. Read the page aloud with the visuals removed. If it still explains the business, an answer engine can too.
