AI Overviews are Google's AI-written answer, sitting above every blue link

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google Search places above the normal list of results, synthesised from multiple web pages and shown with inline links to the sources behind the summary. They answer the query directly, often before a person clicks anything.

Definition

An AI Overview is a summary Google Search generates by retrieving and synthesising several web pages for a given query, then displaying that summary at the top of the results page with inline citations to the pages it drew from. It sits above the ranked list of blue links rather than replacing it, and it can appear for a broad range of query types, informational and commercial alike, though not for every search.

Where the summary actually comes from

The process runs in stages rather than a single ranking step. Google retrieves a wide pool of candidate pages for the query, filters that pool for authority and clarity, re-ranks the surviving passages for how directly they answer the question, and only then composes a summary with inline citations to the sources it used.

Retrieval is often broader than the query typed into the box. Google can issue related searches behind the scenes, sometimes called query fan-out, to pull in supporting pages for subtopics the main query implies, then draw the final summary from across that wider set rather than from one search alone.

That is a meaningfully different pipeline from classic search ranking, and it is why a page's position in the AI Overview does not track its position in the ordinary results list one for one.

Which pages actually get cited

The intuitive assumption is that AI Overviews just cite whatever already ranks first. Measured across a large sample of search results, that turns out to be only part of the picture: a substantial share of citations come from well outside the traditional top ten.

That gap has been widening. Ranking position used to be a much stronger predictor of getting cited than it is now, which points to the synthesis step weighing how cleanly a page answers the specific question over how well it performs against the broader set of ranking signals search has used for two decades.

37.9%

of AI Overview citations came from pages ranking in the organic top 10, measured across 863,000 SERPs and 4 million cited URLs.

What this changes for a business website

If nearly a third of citations come from pages nowhere near the first page of results, ranking position alone is not what earns the citation. Clear structure, named entities, and schema that states facts plainly give the synthesis step something safe to lift, which is the same ground AI-readable design covers.

It means a page with real disadvantages in domain authority or backlink count is not automatically shut out of the citation, provided it answers the specific question more directly and legibly than the pages that outrank it.

Practically, that means a single page answering one question clearly, with the answer stated in the first sentence a reader would meet, competes on more even terms in an AI Overview than it ever did in the ranked list, where age, backlink volume, and domain history carry more weight.

Does an AI Overview replace the need to rank at all

No. AI Overviews sit above the ranked results, not instead of them, and a page still needs to be crawlable and indexable to be a retrieval candidate in the first place. What changes is which page among the candidates gets picked to be summarised and linked.

A page that never ranks at all is never in the candidate pool to begin with, so the usual fundamentals, working robots.txt, indexable HTML, real content rather than a thin placeholder, still come first. AI Overviews change the second stage of the contest, not whether a page gets to compete in it. Treating the feature as a replacement for ranking fundamentals, rather than a second stage sitting on top of them, is the most common way businesses misread what actually changed.

What actually earns the citation once a page is in the pool

Once a page is a retrieval candidate, the deciding factor is usually how cleanly it isolates the answer. A page with a clear heading matching the question, a direct one or two sentence answer near the top, and specific supporting detail underneath gives the synthesis step a passage it can lift with confidence. A page that buries the answer inside a long, unstructured block of marketing copy gives it nothing safe to extract.

Schema that names the actual entities involved, the organisation, the person, the place, adds another layer the system can cross-check against on top of the plain-language answer, not instead of it.

Cited, not just ranked

A page can rank nowhere near first and still be the one an AI Overview quotes, if it answers the question most cleanly.

Common questions

What are Google AI Overviews?

AI-generated summaries that Google Search places above the normal list of results, synthesised from multiple web pages and shown with inline links to the sources behind the summary. They answer the query directly, at the top of the page.

How does Google pick which pages to cite in an AI Overview?

Through a multi-stage process: a broad pool of candidate pages is retrieved for the query, filtered for authority and clarity, then re-ranked at the passage level for how directly and safely each one answers the question before a summary is composed with inline citations.

Do I need to rank number one to appear in an AI Overview?

No. Citations increasingly come from pages well outside the traditional top ten, because the selection favours a page that answers the question clearly and safely over one that simply ranks highest.

Are AI Overviews the same as featured snippets?

No. A featured snippet pulls one passage from a single page. An AI Overview is a generated synthesis drawing on multiple pages at once, and it can cite several sources in one answer rather than lifting from just one.

Do AI Overviews reduce traffic to the sites they cite?

It depends on the query and how directly the overview answers it. See our full answer on how AI Overviews affect website traffic for the detail.
