Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring a business so AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews can read it accurately and cite it in an answer. It covers site structure, entity clarity, structured data, and consistency across the web. Where SEO earns a position on a results page, AEO earns a mention inside the answer itself.

AEO is the set of practices that make a business legible enough for an AI system to summarise it correctly and confident enough in that summary to repeat it as a recommendation. It sits underneath the visible page: semantic structure, structured data, answer-ready copy, and the same facts stated consistently everywhere the business appears online.
Where the term comes from
AEO is a newer cousin of SEO, coined as AI systems moved from linking to answering. Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot now read a set of sources, form an answer, and present it directly, often without the reader ever clicking through to a website.
"Optimization" carried over from SEO because the underlying goal is the same: be the source a mediating system chooses to surface. But the mechanics changed. A ranking algorithm scores pages against a query. A language model reads pages, forms an understanding, and decides whether it trusts that understanding enough to attribute a claim to your business by name.
What AEO actually optimizes for
Entity clarity comes first: a page has to state plainly who the business is, what category it operates in, who runs it, and what it offers, without making a reader or a machine infer this from tone or imagery.
Structured data turns that clarity into something machines can parse directly. Schema.org markup names the organisation, its services, and its proof in a format built for extraction, not just for display.
Answer-ready content phrases claims so they can be lifted whole into an answer: one point per paragraph, plain language, no claim that depends on the surrounding page to make sense.
Cross-platform consistency closes the loop. AI systems weigh a claim more heavily when it matches what they read elsewhere: the business's own site, its Google Business Profile, directories, and independent articles. Consistency is a trust signal a single page cannot fake on its own.
Most of the field is never read out. Getting picked is a structural property, not a reward for effort.
How it differs from SEO in practice
SEO's unit of success is position and clicks. AEO's is being cited or recommended, whether or not the reader ever visits the site. A page can rank first for its target query and still never appear in an AI answer, because ranking algorithms and language models weigh different signals.
SEO rewards keyword density, backlinks, and technical performance. AEO rewards the things that make a claim easy to trust and repeat: clear entities, structured data, and agreement across sources. Common mistakes when businesses try it
Bolting on a chatbot or an "AI-powered" plugin without restructuring the underlying site changes nothing about what answer engines actually read. The plugin does not fix a heading tree hidden inside an image, or a claim that only exists after JavaScript hydrates.
Ignoring off-site consistency is the other common gap. A business can perfect its own site and still lose citations if its name, category, or founder differ across its Google Business Profile, directories, and articles, because that mismatch reads as unreliable data to a system cross-checking sources.
Where a business actually starts
The first step is an honest audit of what AI systems can currently read: whether the category and offer are stated in text a machine can find, whether headings form a logical tree, and whether structured data exists at all. Most sites have never been checked this way.
The second step is structural, not cosmetic: fixing the heading tree, moving claims out of images and into text, and adding schema that names the business plainly. None of this changes how the site looks to a visitor.
The last step is consistency work across the web: making sure the same name, category, and facts appear the same way on the site, the Google Business Profile, and the directories and articles an AI system might cross-check. This is the part that compounds over months rather than showing up overnight.
