Generative engine optimization is the discipline of structuring and supporting content so a generative AI system can safely extract, quote, or paraphrase it when synthesising an answer. It was formalised as a distinct research problem by Aggarwal et al. in a 2024 paper that tested how different content strategies changed a page's visibility inside generated responses, rather than its position in a ranked list.

Where the term comes from

GEO was named and measured in a 2024 paper from researchers including Princeton and IIT Delhi, presented at KDD, one of the field's major data mining conferences. The authors built a benchmark of real user queries and generative responses, then tested nine different content modifications against it to see which ones actually changed whether a source got cited.

That is a meaningfully different test from classic SEO research, which measures ranking position. GEO measures something closer to visibility inside a synthesised answer: how often a source is drawn on, and how prominently, once the generative system has already decided which pages to read.

What the research found actually moves the needle

Of the nine strategies tested, adding citations, credible quotations, and statistics produced the largest gains, on the order of 30 to 40 percent on the study's visibility metric. Simpler moves like reordering keywords or adding more of them did far less, and keyword stuffing specifically made things worse rather than neutral.

That is the opposite of how classic keyword SEO behaves, where more mentions of a target phrase at least used to help up to a point. A generative system is not counting keyword density; it is deciding what is safe and specific enough to lift into an answer it puts its own credibility behind, and vague, repetitive copy gives it nothing to work with.

How GEO differs from SEO and AEO

The three terms describe overlapping but distinct concerns. SEO is the broadest and oldest: earning a position in a ranked list of results. AEO, answer engine optimization, describes being findable and citable across answer engines generally, AI Overviews, chatbots, voice assistants, as a category. GEO is the narrower, research-derived term for optimizing the content itself for generative synthesis specifically.

Google's own documentation is direct on this point: there are no additional requirements, no special file or bespoke markup, to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. GEO is not a technical trick to install; it is a content property, whether the page states a specific, checkable claim clearly enough for a generative system to reuse it safely.
