GEO, AEO and SEO optimize for three different search surfaces

Generative engine optimization, answer engine optimization and search engine optimization are not three names for the same practice. SEO earns a ranked link a person clicks, AEO earns a direct answer a person reads without clicking, and GEO earns a citation inside a generated response from a chatbot like ChatGPT or Claude.

Short answer

SEO ranks a page in a list of links on a traditional search engine. AEO gets a page's answer surfaced directly, in a featured snippet, a voice reply, or an AI Overview, without the user needing to click through. GEO gets a page cited or paraphrased inside a generative chatbot's own written response. The three overlap heavily in the underlying signals they reward, structure, authority, clarity, but they are optimizing for three different places a business can show up.

What each term actually optimizes for

Search engine optimization is the oldest of the three and the one most people already understand: it improves where a page ranks in an ordered list of links, and the business earns a click if the person scans down to it and decides it looks relevant enough to open.

Answer engine optimization targets a newer kind of result: a direct answer a search engine or voice assistant gives on the spot, a featured snippet, an AI Overview, a spoken reply, without the person clicking through to a page at all. The page still has to be findable and authoritative, but the win is being quoted, not being clicked.

Generative engine optimization is about a different surface again: a chatbot like ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity generating a written response to a conversational question, and deciding which sources to draw from and cite while writing it. GEO's job is to make a page the kind of source that generation process reaches for.

Three surfaces, one page

The same page can rank in Google, get read aloud by a voice assistant, and get cited inside a ChatGPT answer. Each of those is a separate thing to earn.

Why the three overlap more than the names suggest

None of the three replaces the others. A generative engine still relies on a crawled, indexed web to find candidate sources, which means the crawlability and structural clarity SEO has always rewarded is still load-bearing for GEO and AEO as well.

What changes is what earns the win once a page is findable. Keyword density and backlink volume, the classic SEO levers, do little to get a page quoted inside a generated answer. What gets quoted is a page that states a clear answer in plain language, backs it with a named source or a specific figure, and is structured so a machine can lift a paragraph cleanly rather than piecing one together from scattered fragments.

That is why most credible guidance treats GEO and AEO as heavily overlapping rather than as two separate disciplines, and treats both as an extension of SEO rather than a replacement for it. A business does not choose one; it builds a page that can win at all three at once.

Which one to prioritize

For a business asking which term to chase, the honest answer is that the underlying work is close to identical: clear, specific, well-structured content with real evidence behind its claims. What differs is which surface reports back, and how easily.

Google Search Console shows SEO and AEO wins directly: ranking position, featured snippet appearances, AI Overview citations. GEO's citations inside a ChatGPT or Perplexity answer are harder to measure, since none of those tools currently publish a citation report, so most businesses check manually by asking the questions their customers would ask and seeing whether they get named.

The practical move is to build for the overlap: pages a traditional search engine can rank, a voice assistant can read aloud, and a generative chatbot can cite, rather than writing three different versions of the same content for three different acronyms.
