What is Google AI Mode?
Google AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience inside Google Search: someone asks a question, Google researches across many sources and composes an answer with citations, and the person can keep asking follow-up questions in the same thread instead of running a fresh search each time. It already carries more than a billion monthly users, and it does not answer the same way the ordinary results page, or even an AI Overview sitting above it, answers the same question.

Definition
Google AI Mode is a dedicated mode inside Google Search that replaces the familiar ranked list of results with a conversational, multi-turn interface. A person types a question, Google's AI model researches across many sources and composes an answer with linked citations, and the person can refine or extend the question in the same session. It sits alongside ordinary search and AI Overviews rather than replacing either.
How it differs from a normal search and from AI Overviews
Ordinary Google Search still returns a ranked list of pages. An AI Overview adds a generated summary box above that list for queries where Google judges one useful, and the ranked list stays underneath, unchanged. AI Mode replaces the page with a chat-style thread: the first answer is longer and more research-driven, and a follow-up question continues the same conversation rather than starting over.
The two AI surfaces also do not draw on the same pages nearly as often as their similar answers would suggest. Ahrefs compared AI Mode and AI Overviews responses to the same queries and found the two name the exact same URL as a citation only 13.7% of the time, even though what each surface says is usually close in substance. Being cited in one is not a safe guarantee of being cited in the other.
How big AI Mode already is
AI Mode is not a small experiment any more. Google told its 2026 I/O developer conference that AI Mode had crossed 1 billion monthly active users, a figure it reached in roughly a year since launch and described as its biggest upgrade to Search since AI Overviews, which Google separately put at over 2.5 billion monthly users on the same stage.
At that scale, a meaningful and growing share of search sessions now runs through a generated, conversational answer rather than, or before, a page of ranked links. A business whose site is invisible to that pipeline is not missing a niche feature; it is missing a surface already used by more than a billion people a month.

What this means if you want to be visible in it
Google's own position is that there is no separate technical checklist for AI Mode: the usual SEO fundamentals, a crawlable page, clear structure, a direct answer near the top, apply here as everywhere else. The specific mechanics, including why a top-10 ranking no longer guarantees a citation, are covered in full on how to appear in Google AI Mode.
The one habit worth adopting specifically because of the distinction above: check AI Mode and AI Overviews separately rather than treating a result in one as proof of the other. Given how rarely they cite the same page, a business tracking only AI Overviews is reading half the picture at best.
Common questions
What is Google AI Mode?
A dedicated, conversational mode inside Google Search. Instead of a ranked list of links, a person asks a question, Google researches across many sources and composes an answer with citations, and the person can keep asking follow-up questions in the same thread.
Is Google AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?
No. AI Overviews is a generated summary that appears above an ordinary results page, which still sits underneath it. AI Mode replaces the page with a full conversational interface, and Ahrefs found the two cite the exact same URL for a given query only 13.7% of the time.
How many people actually use Google AI Mode?
Google told its 2026 I/O developer conference that AI Mode had crossed 1 billion monthly active users, reached in roughly a year since launch, which it called its biggest upgrade to Search since AI Overviews.
Do I need special markup or a separate file to appear in AI Mode?
No. Google says ordinary SEO fundamentals apply and no special optimisation unlocks inclusion. The specific mechanics, including why top rankings no longer guarantee a citation, are covered in full on how to appear in Google AI Mode.
Should I track AI Mode separately from AI Overviews?
Yes. Because the two surfaces cite different pages far more often than they cite the same one, a business that only checks whether it appears in AI Overviews is missing most of what AI Mode is actually doing with its site.
