Citation share is the percentage of AI answers that actually cite you
AI citation share is the percentage of citation events across a set of AI-generated answers, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, that name a specific brand or domain as the source behind a claim. It is a narrower and more useful number than being mentioned: it measures whether an AI system trusts a page enough to cite it, not just whether it recognises the brand's name.
Definition
AI citation share is the proportion of citation events, an AI system naming a specific URL as the source behind a claim in its answer, that belong to one brand or domain, measured across a set of tracked prompts. If a hundred tracked answers cite 800 URLs in total and 80 of those citations point to one domain, that domain's citation share for the set is 10%. It is a trust measurement, distinct from simply being named.
Citation share vs share of voice
The two get used interchangeably and answer different questions. Share of voice counts how often a brand is mentioned by name anywhere in an AI answer, which can happen with no link and no verification attached, closer to a recognition signal.
Citation share counts a narrower, more specific event: the AI system pointing to a particular URL as the evidence for a claim it just made. A brand can have real name recognition and still convert almost none of it into citations, if nothing on its site is structured clearly enough to be the thing an engine reaches for as proof.
Being mentioned costs an AI system nothing. Citing a source is a claim about which page it actually trusted.
Why it doesn't track search ranking the way you'd expect
Ranking well used to be close to sufficient for visibility. Citation behaviour has already decoupled from that. Ahrefs measured 863,000 SERPs and found only 38% of AI Overview citations come from a page that also ranks in the top ten for the same query, down from 76% a year earlier.
The same study found 31% of citations, across roughly 4 million cited URLs, come from pages ranked beyond position 100, and 28.3% of cited pages had no meaningful organic search visibility at all. Position and citation are measurably separate channels now, not two views of the same underlying signal.

Ahrefs, 4M AI Overview URLsWhat actually moves the number
A citation event needs a self-contained claim to point to: a sentence or paragraph that answers a specific question clearly enough to be lifted on its own. Content that only makes sense in the context of the whole page around it is harder to cite, whatever its ranking.
Consistency does the rest of the work. If the same fact is stated differently across a site, or across the site and its other web presence, an engine has less reason to treat any single version as the authoritative one to cite. This is the same discipline E-E-A-T describes from the trust side: a citation is, in effect, an engine deciding a source is trustworthy enough to name.
Who actually tracks it
Dedicated AI visibility platforms sample a set of prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI features, log every citation event, and compute the share automatically. That is the only practical way to track it at volume across many queries.
A smaller business can approximate the same thing by hand: ask the target questions directly across the major AI systems, note which sources they actually name, and repeat periodically. It will not be a comparable statistic to a dashboard number, but it is enough to see, honestly, whether the site is ever the one being cited.
Common questions
What is AI citation share?
The percentage of citation events across a set of AI-generated answers that point to one brand or domain. If a hundred tracked answers cite 800 URLs in total and 80 of those citations point to one domain, that domain's citation share for the set is 10%.
How is citation share different from share of voice?
Share of voice measures how often a brand is mentioned by name in AI answers, a recognition signal. Citation share measures how often an AI system names a specific URL as the source behind a claim, a trust signal. A brand can be mentioned without ever being cited as a source, and the two numbers can move independently.
Does citation share correlate with Google ranking position?
Less than most people expect. Ahrefs found that only 38% of AI Overview citations come from a page also ranking in the top ten for the same query, down from 76% a year earlier, and 31% of citations come from pages ranked beyond position 100. Ranking well helps, but it is no longer close to sufficient on its own.
How can a business improve its AI citation share?
Make individual claims specific and self-contained enough that an AI system can lift a sentence and cite it without additional context. Keep the facts behind those claims consistent everywhere the business appears, and structure pages so the answer to a likely question sits in one clear place rather than scattered across paragraphs.
Which AI systems does citation share track?
Any system that names sources when it answers: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT with browsing, and Perplexity are the three most commonly tracked. Coverage and methodology vary by tool, so a citation share figure is only comparable to another figure measured the same way.
