Beautiful, and invisible

A site can be beautiful and still be invisible to the systems deciding what to recommend. The blind spot is structure, and it is fixable.

In brief
  • It is possible to invest heavily in a site that looks remarkable and still be passed over by the systems that decide what to surface.
  • The fix is not to make the site plainer. It is to make sure the beauty sits on a structure machines can read.
  • No one has to choose between a site that moves people and one that machines understand.
01

The blind spot

It is possible to invest heavily in a site that looks remarkable and still be passed over by the systems that decide what to surface. The work was real. The structure underneath was not.

The work was real. The structure underneath was not.

When meaning is baked into images, animation, or markup that machines cannot parse, the craft is invisible to the very systems sending people your way.

This failure is quiet. Nothing breaks, no error appears, and the site performs beautifully in every review meeting. It simply does not get mentioned anywhere you are not already known.

02

How it usually happens

Almost nobody sets out to build an unreadable site. It happens through a sequence of individually reasonable decisions.

A headline is set as an image because the typography was hard to reproduce in the browser. A key section is rendered on canvas because the effect was worth it. Copy is shortened to fit a layout until it no longer explains anything. Each choice is defensible. The total is a site that looks like a business and reads like a decoration.

The pattern is worth naming because it is a process failure rather than a taste failure. Nobody was careless. Nobody was checking the other reader.

03

Keep the craft, fix the foundation

The fix is not to make the site plainer. It is to make sure the beauty sits on a structure machines can read: real text, clear headings, and meaning that survives without the visuals.

The test is blunt. Turn off the styling, or read the page as plain text, and see whether the business is still explained. If it is, the visual layer is free to be as ambitious as you like. If it is not, no amount of polish above it will help.

Done well, no one has to choose between a site that moves people and one that machines understand.
